Ahead of the Pack Ch Jumoke's Red Vixen of Baru, SC
Baru Basenjis of Seattle, Wa, George Woodard. --I breed for good temperament and health. Without these attributes, a dog is destined for a miserable life. I believe all dogs, whether show or pet quality, MUST be a good natured pet first.
I look for the correct sized and short-coupled basenji. It is easier to produce oversized, long-backed dogs that move well and look nifty in the group ring; but that's not what the Standard calls for. I try to maintain a certain head type which is slightly more refined than what is normally seen. Good side wrinkle is important, as is muzzle shape. I dislike and avoid any masking on puppies (even that which fades with age). I like deep red coats. I do a lot of co-breeding & co-owning of stock with Bryan Gregory (Jumoke Basenjis), who lives in the same area, because we share some of the same notions of what the ideal basenji looks like.
I perform all meaningful health testing on my breeding candidates and keep up to date on their get. I continue to seek out any health defects in my pedigrees and do disclose all these to prospective puppy buyers.
The name Baru comes from the sound the basenji makes when he is happy.
